Widford, Hertfordshire: An ancient footpath through the churchyard of St John the Baptist’s church (left) has been saved following a public inquiry after the vicar and wardens of the church denied its existence. The 80-metre footpath is part of the Hertfordshire Way and historical mapping proved it had been used by people on foot for hundreds of years.
Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire: The Peak District National Park Authority has banned motor vehicles from the Roych – a 5½km/ 2-mile stretch of the Pennine Bridleway. It follows a lengthy campaign by local Ramblers and others on the Peak District Green Lanes Alliance, and huge public support for a ban in a recent consultation.
Narberth, Pembrokeshire: The Stoneyford Bridge bridleway, which links walkers and riders to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path National Trail, has reopened after joint pressure from Pembrokeshire Bridleways Group and Pembrokeshire Ramblers.
Kimberworth, South Yorkshire: A key section of the Run Round Rotherham and Sheffield Way long-distance paths has been reopened as a public right of way after a four-year campaign by local Ramblers and Rotherham Harriers and Athletics Club. The 200-metre path went to a public inquiry in 2011 and, following the inspector’s approval, Ramblers helped to install steps and signposts, and resurface the path to make it walkable again.
Llandrindod Wells, Powys: The future of a local path has been secured now that Powys County Council has added it to the official record of public rights of way, following a long campaign by residents and Ramblers. The 90-metre path crosses the footbridge over the Heart of Wales railway line and connects local residents with the village green and playing fields.
Isle of Wight: The island’s Ramblers have created a new, family-friendly 6½-mile trail from Freshwater to Tapnell Farm. The Tapnell Trail is the third accessible route created by Isle of Wight Ramblers, who have removed stiles and replaced them with gates and information boards.
